A Medico-historical Study on Chancroid -Based on Medical Classics of Korea-

Abstract
The author has tried to trace the conception on the aetiology of chancroid and the explanation on symptoms and treatment of chancroid, treating of materials equivalent to those of modern medicine, obtained mainly from the Korean medical classics: Hy-ang Yak-Jip-Sung-Bang (Collection of Home Produced Drugs) and Tong-Eui-Po-Kam (Treasury of Oriental Medicine).
The author has come to the following conclusions:
1) They attributed the aetiology of chancroid to unclean sexual contact and the air contaminated by it.
2) They brought about, though in fragments and fantastic, a characteristic descri-ption on the symptoms of Chancroid.
3) The description of Tong-Eui-Po-Kam is more complicate than that of Hyang-Yak-Jip-Sung-Bang, because of the transmission of syphilis which already took place in Korea then.
4) The drugs in the prescriptions for the treatment of chancroid are supposed to be available, more or less, to reduce the symptoms of chancroid.
